Star Wars -> Computer ethic?

This semester we get this module that its purpose is to learn on how to make good academic papers. We learn things such as research, making references etc. The presentation of this module is quite unique IMO, but effective. Last week, they give us a fictional case about a factory robot who accidently killed its operator. In the case, there are five major character that supposedly responsible for the accidents. They are the CEO, the manager, the programmer, the tester of the robot company, and the operator himself. We were then divided into five groups and each group is assign to one character. Each group's task is to prosecute and defend the character on their part of the accidents. One could say that the CEO is responsible because he's the head of the company that produce the defect robot, the programmer is at fault because he's the one who produce the faulty software and soon.

This become alot of fun because some group present their case against a particular character like a lawyer in that court room drama movies. But my classmate Darren probably the best of the lot when he presents a case against the killed operator. He argue, that given the facts that he lacked the training and he's working in a dangerous enviroment, he should've reject on operating that robot in the first place. Then he gives the best example of the afternoon: "You all seen Star Wars right? We all remember when Luke Skywalker destroy the Death Star ship that were a threat to the universe. But have you ever think that he also killed innocents who work in the Death Star? . Cleaners, engineers, janitors, all those who probably never mean any harms but just happened to worked there. But does anybody accuse Luke other than a hero? No. That's because all those people who work there knows the consequences of working in an evil war ship like that. The operator should know that if he's incapable of working in such a dangerous environment, he should reject to operate the robot."

LOL! class, credits where its due.

cheers..
